History
Our Philosophy
Understanding history should help children to understand the world that we live in today. Our teaching of history enables children to have a coherent knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world so that they can understand how this has shaped today’s society. We aim for children to have a secure understanding of chronology and to be able to use historical vocabulary to describe events in the past. It is important that children know the story of the place they call home so we include lots of opportunities for learning about the history of Morton and the surrounding areas. It is also important that they know how influences from the wider world have helped to shape our community so we ensure that there are opportunities to learn about and reflect on these.
How we teach History
Our history curriculum has been developed to ensure that it covers all aspects of the National Curriculum. History is taught in well planned and sequenced units and where appropriate links are made to other subjects. We have 4 substantive concepts which are weaved throughout the history curriculum.
We have a two-year curriculum cycle to fit with our mixed age classes. Our history units are sequenced in a way that allows for chronological understanding and progression. Each unit provides time to look at timelines in order to understand where this period of history fits within the past.
Lessons provide children with opportunities to retrieve information that they already know as well as learn and develop new vocabulary and knowledge. On-going quizzes allow teachers to assess how much knowledge children have learnt and remembered.
